Killarney National Park

Situated in south-west Ireland, close to the most westerly point in Europe, the National Park covers over 25,000 acres (10,000 hectares) of mountain, moorland, woodland, waterways, parks and gardens. A major geological boundary occurs within the Park, and this, in combination with the climatic influence of the gulf stream and the wide range of altitudes in the Park, gives rise to an unusual and varied ecology.

For the active, walking and cycling are two of the best ways to see the National Park. details of which can be obtained from the National Park Visitor Centre at Muckross House.

For the more energetic it is possible to combine a walk or cycle ride with a boat trip by travelling to the top of the Upper Lake by open boat (most boat operators will take bikes on board), and returning to Killarney by cycling via the Gap of Dunloe or walking via the Old Kenmare Road (not to be underestimated!).

Boat Trips are available in several locations within the National Park, however the main boating centre is at Ross Castle.

Castlegregory Surfing

Garywilliams:

For experienced surfers only. Found on the furthest point of Brandon bay past
mossies point this spot has been known to hospitalise surfers on the sharp shallow reef.
A beautiful spot which looks across the bay humbled by the mountains, on a special day you can be joined by dolphins or seals....
Garywilliams is a hollow right hand wave with a tricky take off and works best on a mid to incoming or dropping tide. south-easterly wind is preferable.

Mossies:

The big wave spot of Brandon bay generally a right hander but the left can be
surfed with the right swell direction. access can be difficult climbing down the steep rocks and timing your dive into the water. When this spot is on it can link up to another spot called Shitties. Mossie works on a mid to high tide. if you do get caught on the low tide Shitties is the spot to warm up until Mossies is working.

Dumps:

Named after its behaviour on high tide, dumps is the perfect spot for beginners and experienced surfers alike.. A flat beach that provides soft rolling wave for beginners on low tide and faster steeper wave at high. Dumps is a great spot for hanging out and meeting the local. it can get busy here during the holidays but generally it has a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. Dumps works on well from low to high tides and if the wind has any east in it.

Stoney Gap:

Located on the opposite side of the Maharees peninsular to sandy bay(a popular pleasure beach). This spot is ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers. A great spot in the summer especially with the sun going down in the west its great place to long board until dusk, which can be as late as midnight. Works best with a south-east wind and can be surfed at low or high tide

Stradbally:

Half way along Brandon bay Stradbally beach is located approx 200 meters from Stradbally golf course. This beach works best on north-westerly swells . Peaks of the waves move around as the tide approaches or drops. Parking there can be quite tight so consider the farmers and don’t block access to fields.

Gowlane:

Just 500meters from Stradbally this is a similar beach break, being a long sandy beach the peaks tend to shift after large swells. High tide encourages the wave to break close to the shore giving more shape and power(also less duck dives). Parking is the same as Stradbally so consider others when you park. mid to high tide is best with southerly
winds.

Brandon pier:

A fun powerful wave when its on, which is very rare. This wave only works on the biggest northerly winter swells. It is always very cold here being a river mouth break. the river winds its way from Brandon mountain, its not uncommon to find ice floating through the line up. This wave is a very fast very hollow left hander and if your up for it it can provide nice wide barrels.
When it gets too cold to take, paddle in up the slip way and into Murphy’s pub where they have an open fire and a great pint. Wind from the south to west is best with a low to mid tide.

Inch reef:

Inch reef is one of the longest right hand waves in Europe and is located on the other side of the peninsular to Brandon bay. When all the components are right a wave can be ridden for almost a minute and a half. the wave has many different sections, sloppy, steep, fast, slow and hollow. If you catch a wave all the way to the breach it is quicker to get out and walk back along the road and down the cliff to paddle out again. Parking is on the road side so be careful not cause a hazard as this is a main road. There is cafe and shop on the beach witch is great for refuelling between sessions.
Access is down the cliff near the peak of the reef. it is hidden so it is best to watch other people get in first. Wind from the north west and east is fine as it gets great shelter from the cliffs and works on all tides. Best on mid to high.

Inch beach:

The beach break is a long sandy beach that a lot of people like to drive down
the beach and many need to be towed off it so be careful. a good wave for beginners but beware of the cross shore currents. Any wind with east in it will do fine and its fine to surf on all tides.

Colmeenoole:

the most westerly beach in Europe, famous for being the location of the internationally acclaimed film Ryan’s daughter and Into the west. It is also one of the most fun waves in the area. Access is down a steep track. The scenery whilst surfing is spectacular. This is a very steep beach giving very fast heavy wave, plenty of barrels to have here usually ending up on the sand. A fun trick wave that is not great for beginners.
Wind from the north and a mid to high tide it is well worth the drive.
